Red&Grey Design along with Emma Curley Architects, Areaman Productions, Henrietta McKervey and IADT design lecturer, Dr Linda King, won the tender to produce Dublin’s submission for the World Design Capital 2014. The ambitious application was initiated with the support of the four Dublin councils by Dublin City architect, Ali Grehan.
Brief.
To create a successful bid theme and strategy, formulate the content and produce the bid document. It was important that the team had a strong knowledge of contemporary Irish and International design across all disciplines. Bob took on the role of creative director and lead consultant for the bid.
Concept.
Working closely with our partners and under the guidance of DCC we set out an extensive programme to research, write and produce a unique and authentic graphic approach for the submission package. Our goal was to produce a bid that can generate an awareness of design that drives economic and social development and asks the questions: Why Dublin? Why Design? Why Now? Why PIVOT?
Outcome.
A 416 page bid document (with 30 different covers designed by a variety of creative Dubliners) that comprises of comprehensive research, writing and design that promotes Dublin as a city that understands the need for reinvention by design. A city that given the permission can make the undervalued valued and the ordinary extraordinary.
A series of three short films ‘Conversations’, shot in homes across Dublin in which groups of five people with diverse opinions on design engage in lively, thought-provoking discussions. The films focus on the potential legacy of Dublin as World Design Capital and have fed into PIVOT Dublin’s four proposed themes: Connecting Cities, Making Cities Lighter, Making Cities Flow, and Making Cities Smile. We also produced ‘Dialogue’ a series of filmed questions and answers with participants from design, business, education and social backgrounds. Contributers did not know the identity of the person who selected them, but they did know whom they, in turn, put a question to.
As well as reflecting the design of the bid document the PIVOT Dublin website has an ongoing blog with contributers from across world, a continuously updated design agenda, design success stories, a design timeline, educational and professional design information, the PIVOT Dublin films and much much more.
